Mail Theft

Please be advised we are currently experiencing mail thefts in the area. Suspects are taking outgoing mail from mailboxes prior to the mail carrier picking it up. They are also taking mail that has been delivered and not yet picked up by residents. Please DO NOT place outgoing mail, especially that containing checks and bill payment slips with account numbers, in your mailboxes. Take it to the post office or give it directly to the mail carrier if possible. Read more on the community forum.

Easter Egg Hunt Recap

The annual MAK Easter Egg Hunt was held on March 16th, and we had a wonderful time. Thank you to Lib Kennedy for hosting again and to all of the volunteers and participants. You can view photos online now!

Paperless MAK Newsletter

One of our goals for 2008 is to move to a paperless newsletter format. Not only will it be more environmentally-friendly, it will allow us to keep our neighbors informed more frequently. If you wish to be included on the email list, or if your email address has changed within the past year, please provide the MAK Secretary with the email address you now use.

MAK Yard Sale

Saturday, April 12th: 8am-2pm
It's time for Spring Cleaning! Join your neighbors at the MAK Yard Sale. Just two weeks before the MAK Trash Amnesty Day–what you don’t sell; toss to the curb! For more information, please contact MAK Social Director, Rick Abt.

MAK Trash Amnesty Day

Saturday, April 26th: 8am-3:30pm
All items to be collected should be placed at the curb no later than 7:30am. The City will collect yard trimmings, building materials (that are not from the work of private contractors), tires, appliances (not containing Freon), and trash that would not normally be placed in pay-as-you-throw (PAYT) bags. The City will not collect liquids, dirt, bricks, blocks, stone, rocks, concrete, or motor vehicle batteries or parts.

2nd Annual MAK Porch Parties

Bring a chair, a snack for sharing and your favorite beverage. It's a great way to meet and mingle with your MAK neighbors!

  • Sunday, May 18th
  • Sunday, June 8th
  • Aug TBD
  • Sept TBD

Historic MAK Notecards

Introduced at the 2008 Decatur Tour of Homes, the MAK boxed notecard set is available for purchase. Each set features five historic homes on Adams street rendered by local artist TW Meyer. Boxes of 10 cards with envelopes are available for $5 and may be purchased from the MAK Treasurer, Miriam Mathura. Generously sponsored by Miriam Mathura (Coldwell Banker Intown), proceeds benefit the neighborhood association.

New Historic Preservation Planner

We are pleased to welcome Regina Brewer to Decatur. Regina is the new Historic Preservation Planner and is responsible for reviewing plans for compliance with historic preservation requirements. If you are thinking about adding on a house extension or building a garage, Regina is your first point of contact. She's a great source of information, and we look forward to working with her! For contact information, check out the City's website.

New MAK Officers

At the last MAK meeting on March 10th, new officers were elected for the 2008-2010 term.

Special thanks to outgoing president, Tim Bricker, for his outstanding work during the previous term.

MAK Website and Forum

The new MAK website (www.makdecatur.org) was launched just prior to the Decatur Tour of Homes, and we're asking for your help as it continues to grow. If you have any comments or content suggestions, please send your ideas to the MAK Secretary, Shannon Belletti.

Also, we now have an MAK Community Forum where MAK residents and friends can read about local news & events, discuss our MAK homes and neighborhood, and get to know our neighbors. It's easy to create an account, so log on and get active!

Leila Ross Wilburn Pattern Books

We are proud to announce that the MAK website now hosts seven pattern books written by Leila Ross Wilburn. You can view the books online, and there is also a section of the site with known LRW homes and their respective patterns.

If you think you may have a Wilburn home, check out the pattern books and let us know if you think you have a match!

Special thanks to the McCain Library at Agnes Scott College, the Library of Congress, and Wilburn's niece (and MAK resident) Lib Kennedy for helping us with this project.
